Samsung Exynos 5 Octa to feature current-generation graphics?

At this year’s CES, three of the world’s major chip manufacturers, announced their new ARM SoCs for high-end smartphones and other mobile devices. Nvidia announced the Tegra 4, Qualcomm the Snapdragon 600 and 800 SoCs and Samsung the Exynos 5 Octa. It seems though, that Apple’s A6X chip will probably have the last laugh, as it does not seem threatened, in terms of graphics performance.

According to popular website Anandtech, this 4&4-core ARM big.LITTLE SoC by Samsung, the Exynos 5 Octa, may achieve top-level scores in general performance, thanks to the new-architecture cores it integrates, but things seem to be completely different in terms of the graphics chipset.

It’s not the fastest one of its kind, and according to Anandtech, this graphics chipset is nothing more than a current-generation PowerVR SGX 544MP3.

This graphics chipset features high performance, but is not as advanced as the ARM Mali-400. Equipped with only 12 SIMD (Simple-Instruction Multiple Data) units and 48 MAD (Multiply Add) units, it will perform similar to Apple’s A5/A5X chips, found in the iPhone 4S and the 3rd generation iPad.
