Ultra HD: 4K technology “dresses up”

The video format, previously known as 4K, will henceforth be called Ultra High Definition (Ultra HD), according to an announcement by Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

According to CEA, this name was selected to imply that this standard features a higher resolution than the current standard with a progressive resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.

In order to don the Ultra HD title, a panel has to feature a resolution of at least 3840x2160 pixels. Also, this product has to integrate at least one digital output with 4K support, as well as the ability to display 4K content without resorting to upscaling.

Ultra HD technology is expected to gain much interest during the upcoming CES 2013 expo, to take place in Last Vegas, next January.
