Explore the Earth in night-time as well

Remember the impressive photos of the “Black Marble” project by NASA, we posted a few days ago? Thanks to NASA partnering up with Google Maps, these have now been converted from static images to an incredible interactive experience.

Google’s new night-time maps depict beautiful images from our planet during the night, and have been put together using data gathered by the Suomi NPP satellite, in April and October 2012.

This satellite managed to capture night shots with the help of a special kind of technology, named Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). In fact, according to Google, it took 312 satellite orbits to photograph the entire Earth.

You can view Google’s new night-time maps, here. We took a look above Greece, and as you can see, it’s as wonderful as ever.
